Decision Fatigue: Welcome To The Deep Freeze

When your kids were little, Elsa froze it all. In midlife, it’s your brain’s turn.

📸 WHY THIS PHOTO?

Real families. Real memories. Real life.

My daughter is 14 and in high school now, but here she is on a rare Dallas snow day, Elsa costume over her jammies. I’d love to freeze time and hear her singing at the top of her lungs again. Now, in midlife, it’s my brain that feels frozen.

😂 LAUGH LINE

Nothing says midlife like having 27 things to do, getting overwhelmed by all of them, and deciding the best course of action is apparently to reorganize the junk drawer.

🥬 LETTUCE EXPLAIN: WHAT IS DECISION FATIGUE?

Your brain has been making decisions since you opened your eyes. Kids, work, aging parents, appointments, emails, money, dinner.

And in the Sandwich Generation, half the decisions aren’t even about you. You’re tracking your teenager’s needs, your parent’s appointments, your boss’s expectations, everything at home, and somehow, your own life, too.

Then someone asks, “What do you want to do tonight?” Nothing. Not a darn thing.

Decision fatigue is the mental weariness that can build after making decision after decision. It can make it harder to choose, prioritize, or even get started. Psychiatrist Lisa MacLean, MD, says it can show up as procrastination, avoidance, indecision, impulsivity, and increased frustration with family or coworkers.

You May Be Noticing...
  • You keep rereading the same email without answering it.
  • The pile of Amazon returns is daring you to miss the return window.
  • A five-minute task has been on tomorrow’s list for two weeks.
  • Small requests suddenly feel much bigger than they are.
  • “What’s for dinner?” feels like one decision too many.

Sometimes the answer is not trying harder. It is making fewer decisions.

Kendra Adachi, author of The Lazy Genius Way, calls one way of doing this “Decide Once.” Pick a solution for something that keeps coming up and stop making yourself re-decide it every time. Every Tuesday is Taco Tuesday. Give every teacher the same gift. Claim one takeout night. Build a grocery order that mostly works so you don’t have to reinvent dinner.

Sometimes boring is beautiful. 🍎🥗🍔

Save your brainpower for the decisions that actually need it.

📼 VHS VIBES:

Remember the Frozen Years?

Let’s rewind to the days when our little ones wore Elsa dresses over their pajamas, sang “Let It Go” at full volume, and turned the living room into Arendelle.
Back then, Elsa did the freezing. Now it’s our brains.

Money Talks: How Do I Balance College Costs, Caregiving Costs, and Retirement Savings?
Start by separating what is urgent, important, and flexible. Caregiving costs may need attention now, college expenses may have multiple funding options, and retirement savings still deserve protection.

Money Talks: When Should I Talk to My Aging Parents About Their Finances?
Ideally, before a health or financial crisis. Start with the basics: how bills are paid, where financial and estate documents are kept, who their trusted financial contacts are, and who can step in if help is needed. Think information, not interrogation.

Family CFO: What Financial Documents Should I Organize for My Aging Parents?
Start with insurance policies, estate planning documents, account information, recurring bills, tax records, and key professional contacts. You do not need every piece of paper they have ever saved since 1987. You need enough information to help when something important comes up.

Midlife Mogul: How Can Caregiving Affect My Career and Income?
Caregiving can affect work hours, flexibility, advancement, and income, especially when responsibilities increase unexpectedly. Before making a major career change, look into flexible schedules, remote work, caregiver benefits, and leave options that may help you stay employed while supporting your family.
