Caregiving

What Scares You? 👻

Forget ghosts. The scariest part of caring for aging parents is what you can't control.

‍

📸 WHY THIS PHOTO?

Real families. Real memories. Real life.

Halloween 2019. Life was full of chaos, costumes, and fun. We'd pile our kids and the neighborhood kids into the back of a truck for trick-or-treating. Back when the scariest part of Halloween was getting through bedtime after all that sugar.

😂 LAUGH LINE

Nothing scares the sh*t out of you like a “Call me” text from Mom. Either she wants her Tupperware back or someone’s bleeding out on the floor. No in-between.

‍

🥬 LETTUCE EXPLAIN

Halloween has its usual suspects. Ghosts. Goblins. Creepy clowns. But somewhere between raising kids, working full-time, and helping aging parents, our definition of scary changed.

These days, it's Dad casually mentioning he fell last Tuesday, like he's discussing the weather. Or discovering that Mom's prescription isn't ready because the pharmacy is still waiting on the doctor.

For the Sandwich Generation, the scariest things aren't hiding under the bed. They're the things we can't predict, prevent, or control. Especially when we're not there.

‍

You May Be Noticing… 👻

  • You check your phone constantly, especially when Mom or Dad hasn't called back.
  • You imagine emergencies that haven't happened. Yet.
  • You hear "I'm fine" and immediately wonder what they're not telling you.
  • The doctor can't see Mom for three weeks, and you need answers now.
  • You're on hold with three different offices, hoping Dad has enough medication to last the weekend.
  • Your kids, your boss, and your parents all need something. At the exact same time.

And while we can laugh about these everyday jump scares, there's something deeper underneath them.

Through our conversations with family caregivers, we've heard just how much the uncertainty weighs on them. It's not always the appointments, paperwork, or endless to-do lists. It's the what-ifs. The fear of something happening when they're not there.

That's especially hard when you're used to being the person with all the answers. The one who solves problems, manages calendars, remembers medications, and somehow knows exactly which cabinet has the extra batteries.

But here's the reality: You can love someone with everything you've got and still not be able to protect them from everything.

And that's perhaps the scariest part of caregiving. No matter how much you do, some things will always be beyond your control.

‍

Managing What You Can Control

The good news? You don't need a crystal ball to feel a little more prepared.

You just need a few plans in place so you're not starting from scratch when something unexpected happens.

Here are four places to begin:

  • Know who to call. Ask your parent's medical team what to do after hours, which symptoms need urgent attention, and where to turn when their regular doctor isn't available.
  • Get ahead of prescription problems. Keep an updated medication list, understand the pharmacy's refill process, and ask the pharmacist or prescriber what to do if an important medication is delayed.
  • Have someone nearby. Identify a trusted neighbor, friend, relative, or local caregiver who can check in when you can't.
  • Share the information. With your parent's permission, make sure trusted family members can securely access important medical contacts, medication details, appointments, and emergency information.

And remember, preparing doesn't mean taking away your parent's independence. It means having conversations together, making decisions before they're urgent, and respecting their wishes along the way.

Peace of mind doesn't mean knowing nothing bad will happen. Sometimes it simply means knowing you have a plan if it does.

🥪 Can We Borrow Your Sandwich Generation Brain?

Mom's prescriptions are in one place. Doctor appointments are in another. Emergency contacts are buried somewhere in your phone. And somehow, you're expected to remember everything.

We're developing our caregiving app prototype, with input from real family caregivers.
We want to understand what would actually help families feel more organized, connected, and prepared.
